In line with the request of the Lebanese Council of Women, MAA DATA GROUP has carried out a public opinion poll addressing the role of Lebanese women in parliamentary elections. The study was conducted during the last week of 2005, in the five regions: North Lebanon, Mount Lebanon, Bekaa, South Lebanon, and Beirut.
The survey was carried out based on the “Hail Fall” sampling method which corresponds to the Operational Logistics Methodology. 25 graduate field researchers accomplished the data collection. 2513 person were contacted. 25% refused to carry on the interview, 6% were out of target and 69% represented the effective sample.
Results confirmed not only the Lebanese society’s respect for women, but also its keenness to let them take their role in public issues:

  1. Almost unanimous support to women on  four issues :
    1.  91% for women participation in organizations.
    2.  81% for a defined women share in parliament.
    3.  80% for working women concept.
    4.  76% for women candidature to parliamentary elections.
  2. Absolute majority supporting women on five issues :
    1.  73% for a women share in municipalities.
    2.  60% satisfied with women organizations.
    3.  58% identified their preferred deputee (woman).
    4.  57% nominated a woman minister.
    5.  50% considered electing women contributes to social justice.
  3. Three weak positions :
    1.  20% only have previously voted for a woman.
    2.  27% nominated a woman for parliament on the Caza level,
      31% on the Mohafazat level, and
      50% on Lebanon’s level.
    3.  37% did not understand the term « Quota »,
      36% advocated the « Quota », and
      27% opposed
  4. Population objectivity :
    1.  82% identified their preferred political figure.
    2.  79% declared the date of their first vote,
      13% did not vote yet.
    3.  76% watch the news.
  5. Sample representativeness :

Seven demographics and sample parameters confirmed the authenticity and soundness of the sample. These were place of election, occupation, level of education, age, gender, place of interview and its timing.
